7 Nights in Luxor [

My search for a dream holiday at ridiculously low prices had ended in frustration. I'd been very naive about my prospects as a single traveller, inflexible on travel dates, and steadfast in my refusal to be placed on the holiday conveyor-belt to Costa-cliché.

The travel agents found two holidays that met all my needs. One in the Red sea resorts, the other in Luxor. Both well over my planned budget. Well it was too late now, I'd already told everyone I was definitely stepping out of the comfort zone this year, so booked the 7 nights in Luxor.

The following photographs and recollections hint at the magical, humbling and enlightening experience I had during my first visit to Egypt.

Three months on from the trip, I've placed a bumper crop of extra photos online.

The Harper's Song for Inherkhawy (Excerpt)

So seize the day! hold holiday!
Be unwearied, unceasing, alive
you and your own true love;
Let not the heart be troubled during your
sojourn on Earth,
but seize the day as it passes!

(Translated by J.L. Foster)

Dating from about 1160 B.C., this poem was found on the tomb of Inherkhawy, a supervisor of workers at the royal burial ground in the ancient city of Thebes. Pretty much the mantra of my time in Egypt.
