It struck me while I watched the painfully
slow demolition of the building that I had seen it sitting
in ruins before.
In the BBC documentary-drama called "Threads".
I believe that there is a scene in the program that shows
the ruins of the extension after a nuclear attack on the
UK.
The demolition was slow and difficult because the architects
had greatly over-engineered the building. At the time
of its design, concerns had been raised about the durability
of concrete buildings. So they designed this one with
an estimated lifespan of 500 years. You've got to laugh
aint ya!

Constructed in 1977, the Town Hall Extention was
considered an eye-sore by many. I always considered
it to be an interesting building, that was certainly
better than the stark modernist buildings of the
1960s. |
