At the centre of High Street is the Supertram
stop. But once there was a world famous landmark here.
Sheffields very own "hole in the road". This
open top subway allowed pedestrians to walk under the
busy roundabout, as well was access many of the surounding
stores from their basement levels.
The world moved on. The idealistic street archicture failed
to account for street criminals and muggers, failed to
defend itself against militant vandals and graffiti artists.
During the early years of the cities regeneration, it
was decided that the hole must go. Its a shame, but was
probably inevitable, almost all of the cities subways
have been blocked off or filled in.
