Sheffield - Loxley

The path down to the Robin Hood Inn..a superb public house

Loxley is a small rural community on the eastern edge of Sheffield, between Stannington and Bradfield. Loxley's greatest claim to fame is that it is the true place of origin for the legend of Robin Hood, who was actually known as Robin of Loxley (known then as Locksley). His famous haunt of Sherwood forest is part of an old fabrication, chiefly created by William Stuckeley whose misrepresentations where taken up by J Lees of Nottingham.

All the evidence points not to Sherwood, but Bardsdale Forest near Doncaster as the location used by Robin and his merry men.
You can learn more about the true history of Robin Hood on this Channel 4 site and this excellent Loxley history site.

The road that connects the handfull of buildings in the valley with the Loxley community.

The community of Loxley lives mostly on the northern edge of the Loxley valley. In the valley is the long uncultivated Loxely common, a thick, river-sodden wood that I used to run through. It's a wonderfully wild spot, though in truth now well manicured as part of a nature trail that heads out to the old brick works at the end of the valley.

Loxley is an idylic rural community on the eastern edge of Sheffield. It's for such a tiny place it has oodles of interesting local history.
