Sheffield - Stannington

Rising up to about 1000 ft above sea level, stannington gets plenty of wind , funneling through the valley from the Peaks

I've lived in Stannington for more than twenty years. Its a nice place to live and I like it here very much. Stannington is a hill community, sitting between the leafy, river-soaked valleys of Rivelin and Loxley. The photograph above shows lower Stannington which runs from the bottom of the hill, from Malin Bridge. At the top of the hill is Stannington Village, the core of the original rural community.

People in Stannington are on first name terms with their milk producers..and I ain't talking about the milk man...Steve..

When I tell people I am from Stannington, I can usually detect a moment of uncertainty in their eyes. You see Stannington is a place you go to, not through. So unless you've had reason to go [to] Stannington you probably won't know it.

If you travel out from Stannington, away from the city you very soon end up in Derbyshire and are well on the way to entering the Peak District National Park. Before then you may see cows...

Stannington became part of Sheffield in 1973, when the local goverment did one of its boundry shuffles. Up till then it had been part of Wortley Rural District.
