Sheffield City Centre - Cultural Quarter

Theatres - Sheffield Lyceam Theatre on the left - Crucible Theatre on the right

The cultural quarter is located right at the centre of the city, about three minutes walk from the town hall. In the photograph above you can see how close the theatres are situated from each other. The building on the left edge of the photo is the Lyceum Theatre, the building on the right edge is the crucible. The crucible has been made famous as the venue for the World Snooker Championships...

Sheffield Lyceum

The crucible has an unusual design that allows the audience to watch productions from 3 sides. This often makes for more dynamic theatre as the performance must play out effectively to people sat around the stage. The crucible is a producing theatre, which means that productions are designed and tailored to its unusual format.

The Lyceum is predominantly a touring theatre, its classic victorian venacular wonderfully contrasts with the modernist simplicity of the Crucible.

The neighbouring Studio Theatre is the smaller experimental cousin of the Crucible.

You can learn more about Sheffield Theatres at their official website.

Sheffield Central Lending Library

Sheffields Central Lending Library occupies a grand three storey building very near the theatres and town hall. As well as serving much of the cities book lending and research needs, it houses Graves Art Gallery on its top floor.

Three distinct venues, the Crucible, The Lyceum and The Studio. Situated in the same central location, they present the largest regional theatre complex outside of London. Around the corner is the cities central lending library and central art galleries.
