The Town Hall was a late arrival, the
Council too busy struggling to solve the social problems
caused by the sudden trebling of Sheffields population,
during the mid to late 19th century.
Opened by Queen Victoria in 1897, an extension was
required only four years later. This extension wasn't
completed for another 26 years, owing to a lack of money
and the outbreak of the Great War.
Later an additional extension was built, this time with
a distinctly postmodern style. It proved quite unpopular
and was referred to as the "egg
box building". It has recently been demolished
to make way for the Winter
Garden and a soon to be built hotel complex.
