Sheffield Canal Basin is now part of a
reburbished development called Victoria Quays. Some of
the work buildings and warehousing have been turned into
modern flats and offices.
Once a major transport hub, by the 1960's the basin had
become redundent, then dilapidated. In the 1990s the area
was redeveloped. It now houses a number of business and
the Sheffields Hilton.
The company I currently work for was situated here for
a number of years before moving to a larger facility in
the Don Valley. My current cycle route to work takes me
through the quays and onto the Canal tow-path each day.

The Sheffield Tinsley Canal was opened in 1819,
finally providing boating access to the centre of
Sheffield. Eventually eclipsed by both rail and
road transport, the Canal is now a smart business
and hotel complex, part of Sheffields economic regeneration. |
