Part of the £120 million "heart
of the City" project, the Millenium Gallery and Winter
Garden have helped bring new quality public space back
to the city centre. The Winter Garden partly replaces
the Town Hall extension that was often known as the "egg-box
building", I rather like the building but must
concede that its replacement is a fantastic enhancement
to the city.
The giant wooden arches of the Winter
Garden are made of Larch, a durable timber that will
turn silver grey over time. The garden contains 2000
plants from around the world, including 150 species.
The Millenium Galleries is home to Sheffield's
metalwork and Ruskin Gallery, as well as hosting touring
collections from the national galleries and museums.
Two recent additions to the cultural quarter are
the Winter Garden and the Millenium Gallery. The
Winter Garden could be thought of as a posh greenhouse.
It is an award winning public building that successfully
marries humanistic design with technical innovation.
